A police officer deployed to the Akwa Ibom State command has been demoted for assaulting a medical doctor while enforcing the stay-at-home order of the Akwa Ibom government.
Recall that the Akwa Ibom State government had exempted health workers from its lockdown order, which was effected to curb the spread of Coronavirus in the state.
The police sergeant, Edidiong Alexander assaulted Dr Daniel Edet who is a surgeon with the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, while on his way to work on Friday evening.
It was gathered that the police began investigating the incident after the Nigerian Medical Association threatened to embark on a strike over the assault incident which left Mr Edet’s hand fractured.
The police office who was found guilty after the investigation was concluded, was demoted from the rank of a sergeant to corporal. The state’s commissioner of police, Imohimi Edgal also met with Mr Edet and the chairman of NMA in the state, and apologised to the surgeon and the medical doctors in Akwa Ibom over the conduct of the police officer.
Akwa Ibom state has only recorded five confirmed cases of the coronavirus, since the outbreak of the disease in the country.
Pandemonium broke out on Thursday in the Olomore axis of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force allegedly shot two traders.The SARS operatives were reported to have stormed Olomore Pepper Market while chasing an internet fraudster also known as Yahoo boy, who ran into the market.Findings showed that stray bullets from the SARS officers’ gunshots hit two pepper sellers in the market during the chase.
An eye witness identified simply as Adamu told The PUNCH that one of the victims was shot in the head and the other was shot in the leg.Adamu said the victims had been rushed to a nearby hospital.There has been no confirmation that the victim shot in the head died as of the time of filing this report but the other victim it was gathered is being treated at the undisclosed hospital.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, had yet to reply a text message sent to his phone and several calls made to his phone were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
There was pandemonium at the Nigerian Correctional Service in Eket community of Akwa Ibom State as a prisoner was allegedly beaten to death by wardens of the correctional facility on Friday November 22.
The death of the prisoner who was reportedly manhandled over a little misunderstanding led to a protest by other prisoners in the early hours of Saturday November 23. It was gathered that properties worth millions were destroyed during the protest.
“Over 100 inmates started the protest around 5:30 am on Saturday in the NCS in Eket because of the killing of one of them. They destroyed property’s worth millions of naira including four internal cells.
“The clinic facilities, kitchen, store houses, pantry and other facilities. They condemned the inmates cells, nearly all the facilities were destroyed” an eyewitness said.
Some of the prisoners who tried to escape during the protest by putting holes on the walls were apprehended while one sustained gunshot injuries. Surveillance has been mounted on the hospital where the injured inmates are receiving treatments.
“If not for the combined JTF, DSS, Police, detachment of neighbouring personnel in other local government area including Uyo, the inmates would have escaped,” the source added.
Mr. Josiah Ogbajie, the spokesperson of the NCS in the state said they are still investigating and will be releasing a statement soon.
A Nigerian man has accused the Nigerian police of unlawful arrest.
Ogbudimkpa Ikenna said he was arrested on Sunday, November 3, in front of his house. He explained that he was formally dressed, yet, this didn’t protect him from being treated like a criminal. He added that he was stripped naked and locked in a cell.
He wrote after his release: “I was unlawfully arrested and detained by operatives of @NGRPolice on Sunday in front of my house by 10:10pm, formally dressed and returning from an event. After identifying myself, I was still arrested, striped naked & locked. There was no curfew and nothing was found on me.”
The Nigerian Air Force has reacted to the death of two residents of Mabera area of Sokoto metropolis, during a fight allegedly spearheaded by one of its officers whose girlfriend was taunted by youths in the beighbourhood.
Daily Nigerian reported that a truckload of airmen were deployed to the community after the lady reported the incident to her boyfriend. A student identified as Abdulsalam Lawan was killed after he fled to a nearby house alongside a 40-year-old mother of seven, Maryam Abdulrahman.
“They often come and brutalise us in this area. We were at a tea joint when they came last night around 8:30pm. They started by shooting sporadically and then asked the soldier’s girlfriend to point at those who taunted her.
“When she failed to identify the real culprits, they meted out frog jump punishment on us. Those who ran away were shot.
“At least five people sustained gunshot injuries while two people died,” an eyewitness, Sani Mabera said.
Reacting to the incident, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information Ibikunle Daramola said they are currently investigating the clash between Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel and suspected Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) youths.
“NAF is investigating the matter with a view to ascertaining the facts as well as establishing the degree of involvement of its personnel”.
An online report alleged the unfortunate killing of 2 persons at Mabera Area of Sokoto Metropolis yesterday, 20 October 2019, as a result of a fracas between Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel and suspected Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) youths within the Community.
“However, details regarding the unfortunate incident, which also led to some NAF personnel sustaining serious injuries, are still sketchy.
“Consequently, the NAF is investigating the matter with a view to ascertaining the facts as well as establishing the degree of involvement of its personnel.
“It is pertinent to reiterate that the NAF is a highly disciplined and professional force that does not tolerate or condone acts of indiscipline or violations of human rights of citizens.
“Therefore, every NAF personnel found guilty of misdemeanor, in the past, had always been dealt with in accordance extant laws and the general public duly informed.
“We wish to assure the general public that, in line with the NAF’s usual practice, this case will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate action taken,” the statement read.
Daramola also said the public will be informed about the outcome of the investigation.
Musa Rabo, an assistant Commissioner of Police and area Commander in Suleja who was abducted over the weekend has reportedly been rescued unhurt.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Police, ‘the officer was successfully rescued this evening (Sunday, October 20th) by a combined team of Police operatives from Kaduna, Niger and Zone 7 Command Headquarters Abuja, backed-up by members of the elite Special Forces of the NPF’.
Two male suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. Investigation into the incident is ongoing. The officer was travelling in his civil dress, with his private vehicle and without escort or any special security at the time of the incident.
He was not targeted as a cop. It was purely an opportunistic crime, indiscriminately and maliciously targeted at citizens using that particular road. He was, perhaps, positionally unlucky at the time of the incident!
A team of Operation Zenda Special Crack Squad led by SP Justine Gberindyer, has recovered the decomposed corpse of Mrs Bridget Ihom, who was killed alongside her husband, Sgt Abraham Ihom, a Police officer serving under Katsina Ala division.
According to a journalist, Raphael Akume, Sgt Ihom and wife were killed by unknown gunmen in Zaki Biam, Ukum local government area of Benue state when they visited home.
“Our inside source said it took the men of Operation Zenda relentless efforts to arrest some of the killers gang to get to the site were sgt Ihom wife was buried. However the men are yet to recover the corpse of sgt Abraham Ihom at the time of reporting. The family of Sgt Ihom were full of praise to SP. The police in Katsina State on Monday arrested a seventy-eight-year-old cleric, Mallam Bello Maialmajri, and owner of a spiritual rehabilitation centre in Daura where inmates were kept and subjected to inhuman conditions.Also arrested along with him were two men whose names were not disclosed.The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Buba, led the team to the centre on Monday where over sixty inmates were seen in terrible conditions
As you heard from the inmates, apart from being subjected to inhuman conditions, some of their so-called teachers practised homosexual acts with them. Although the teachers escaped in the course of the confusion when my men came here when the inmates revolted, we shall get all of them and they would face the full wrath of the law.“From what I have seen here, the old man who is the owner of this place and who is over 78 years old does not have the capacity and facilities to run this place again.”
One of the inmates, Abubakar Saminu, 16, from Yobe State, said his parents brought him to the centre because he was always stealing.He said, “My parents brought me here because they believed I would be cured of my stealing problem. But, here, they would beat us, starve us and subject us to inhuman conditions.”It was learnt that Mallam Maialmajri had already left the running of the centre in the hands of his son, Umar, who reportedly escaped police arrest.
The Emir of Daura, Dr. Umar Farouq, however, told the police Commissioner that the laws should be allowed to take its full course.The Emir who spoke in Hausa said, “We in Daura will not support any act of lawlessness. We want the law to take its full course.”
A Nigerian man took to Twitter to thank the Nigerian police for rescuing his family from a robbery attack that took place by midnight.
According to the Twitter user, he travelled to Akure when a robber broke into his apartment in Oyo state.
He further revealed that he got the number of Oyo state commissioner of police from the Nigerian Police Force website and when he informed him of the robbery attack which was in play with his wife as the victim, a police team was deployed and his apartment was secured in less than 15 minutes.
One Simon Bernard, a teacher at the Command Secondary School of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) in Jaji community of Kaduna state, has confessed to killing Navy Commandant Oluwayemisi Ogundana.
Vanguard reports that Bernard who was arrested after the person he gave Ogundana’s car to sell was apprehended, told the police that he and the deceased were having an affair before she died. According to Vanguard, Simon told the the police that trouble started between them when she used her power as the Commandant of the school to get him sacked as the Chairman of the School’s Parent Teachers Association PTA. The suspect also said he bore a grude against Ogundana who also refused to pay him the sum of N2.5 million after he was sacked.
Simon was arrested after a civilian driver was caught with the deceased’s Toyota Highlander. He was said to have packed a Toyota Highlander belonging to the Commander Ogundana at Air Provost Squadron Office in Kaduna owing to fuel shortage in the car and went out of the base to buy fuel. Before coming back to put the fuel into the car and move it out, some Airforce officers who had gotten wind that the car belonged to a missing Navy Commander from Jaji, laid ambush around the SUV and arrested him immediately he returned.
He was taken into custody. During interrogation, the driver confessed that Mr Simon gave him the SUV to sell.
Ogundana who is said to be married with her husband and children residing in Lagos state, was declared missing on September 20th. Her dismembered body was later found inside a Ghana-Must-Go bag dumped inside a shallow well near Deeper Life Bible Church in Jaji Cantonment.
