SS3 students may sit for GCE if there is no shift in WAEC timetable – FG says

Advertisements

The Federal Government has said that SS3 students may have to sit for the General Certificate Examinations (GCE) in November if there is no shift in the timetable of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, said this during the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, July 23, in Abuja.

He said if Nigeria cannot convince WAEC to shift its examinations, sitting for the GCE may become the only option for Nigerian students.

He added that if Nigeria is able to meet up with the WAEC timetable, there is already a negotiated timeline to move local language subjects such as Ibo, Hausa and Yoruba behind to allow all participating countries the needed time to write the general subjects at the same time.

Nwajiuba also said the ministry will be meeting with relevant stakeholders on July 30 to assess preparations towards safe reopening of schools.

The Minister said: “The Ghanaians will take examinations peculiar to them. But they are all in the first part of the time table so we will work out a domestication module that will take our peculiar subjects behind after we have done generals.

“This will buy us the time we need for all of us to be at par with the rest of West Africa and operating at the same time because the unanimity with which WAEC has always worked is still very important to us.

“Nigeria is not moving away from it, the option would have been to go to November to take the GCE external exams. Nigeria is carefully studying that if in the event everything fails, we may go to that way.”

EFCC arraigned them on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.

The woman was said to have used the sum of N139,704,097 of the N179 million to play sport betting and also paid a tithe of N1 million to a church in Port Harcourt.

One of the counts against the defendants read: “That you Nkechi Mercy Ikogwe, Elites Finance Investment Limited and Efinc Global Investment Limited sometime in 2019 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State within the jurisdiction of this honorable court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N179,326,386.62 by inducing unsuspecting members of the public to invest with your companies: Elites Finance Investment Limited and Efinc Global Investment Limited, assuring them under a false pretence of making 15% interest on all investment made, a representation you knew to be false, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

Justice Obile ordered that the 1st defendant, Ikogwe, be remanded in prosecution’s custody and adjourned the matter till October 19, 2020 for determination of the bail application.

Mercy ran into trouble when the commission received a report about the defendant and two others, accusing them of inducing their victims into participating in a fraudulent investment scheme with a fake promise of 15 per cent return on investment.

Nigerian girl, 10, hired by U.K. school to be it’s new coding genius

A 10-year-old Nigerian girl was recently hired by a school in the United Kingdom to be a coding instructor.

Emmanuella Mayaki is a coding and programming prodigy who recently received her first job at the Southfield Primary School in Coventry, England, as the after school coding club teacher.

According to Face 2 Face Africa, she will be responsible for teaching other kids her age about the basics of coding  including HTML and CSS.

The school selected her for the job because of her extraordinary skill and knowledge in the area.

Mayaki’s passion for technology started at 7 years old. At age 9, she obtained a diploma with a specialty in multiple software programs including Advanced PowerPoint, Desktop Publishing, and Advanced Excel. She is still actively learning other coding languages and programs to expand her knowledge even further.

“In the club, there are currently about nine pupils. Hopefully, the club will increase its members in September,” she said in an interview with Face 2 Face Africa.

“Today, my Academy App among others is already on Google Play store where I pass on knowledge of coding and graphics. I remember at age seven, I set a target to become a professional web designer and analyst at age nine, and I have accomplished it,” she added. “In the first week, I was pretty nervous because I had never taught a group of children. Although, my experience was sublime because I gained experience and I also enriched my skills. My observations were that not everyone grasps how to do it on their first try and there are some that they rush through it in a breeze.”
