Four members of a family who were on their way to attend a funeral lost their lives in a fatal accident involving the bus they were commuting in and a tipper loaded with sand along the Ogidi-Abatete road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Friday, June 11.
According to eyewitnesses, the tipper suffered a burst tyre and the driver lost control of the wheel, causing him to crash into the bus that was conveying the deceased and 15 others.
Confirming the accident, the Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Pascal Anigbo, said the remains of the deceased persons have been deposited in the morgue while the injured were receiving treatment.
“At about 5.20pm on Friday 12 June, 2020 we received a distress call on a fatal Road Traffic Crash (RTC) which occurred at about 5.15pm near Buckie Polytechnic, along Ogidi-Abatete road. FRSC rescue team from Nteje Unit Command were immediately dispatched to the scene of the crash.
The crash involved a Mercedes Benz 608 with registration number AA205DMA driven by one Ezeugwu Christopher and a Mercedes Benz Tipper with enlistment number XD651GDD, drivers name given as FC Ugwumba.
Casualties involved included, Seventeen (17) adult males, One (1) female adult and One (1) female child. Totalling Nineteen (19).They were all rushed to Twinkle Hospital, Ogidi by members of the community.
Six (6) male adult victims in critical condition were referred to Iyi-Enu Specialist Hospital, Ogidi. Information reaching us after a Hospital Follow-Up today Saturday 13 June, 2020 states that Four (4) have been confirmed dead by doctors at Iyi-Enu Specialist Hospital and their corpses deposited at the hospital morgue.
The Sector Commander FRSC, Andrew Kumapayi condole with the family of the deceased and wishes the injured victims quick recovery, warning vehicle owners and drivers against the use of expired or worn-out tyres, particularly during rainy season. He equally advises that only brand new tyres should be used in vehicles as most fairly used tyres, popularly called tokumbo tyres are expired” he said
Two persons were crushed to death and seven others seriously injured when a truck conveying cement ran over two commercial motorcycle operators and two vehicles before falling on another vehicle at the Toll Gate corridor of Lagos – Abeokuta today May 8.
The accident involved a Volkswagen Bus KTU 952 XY, Bajaj Boxer Motorcycle AAB 404 WL, Bajaj Boxer Motorcycle GBE 010 QV, Toyota Highlander jeep Black FKJ 505 DP, Toyota Corolla EKY 556 ES and unmarked Dangote Trailer.
The FRSC and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE) rushed the injured victims to the State General Hospital, Ota while the remains of the dead were evacuated to Ifo General Hospital.
The Public Relations Officer of TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who spoke about the incident said
“The truck was inbound Lagos through the Tollgate when it suddenly developed break failure. In the process, several vehicles and motorcycles in its front and by its side were hit, knocked before it eventually fell on one of them.
The truck in question was fully loaded with cement. In all, 9 casualties were involved, but it can’t be ascertained if they were all in the truck or among the vehicles hit, knocked, rammed over or the one the truck fell on.
The remains of the dead victims have been deposited at the Ifo General Hospital Mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Ota.”
Terca Muigai, the daughter of Kenyan billionaire and Keroche Breweries Chairman. Joseph Karanja, died on Saturday, May 2, following a tragic accident.
Terca was until her death, the Strategy and Innovation Director at Keroche Breweries.
Keroche Breweries announced her death in a press statement.
“As we begin preparation for her final sendoff we ask for respect and privacy during these difficult times,” part of the statement read.
The Keroche Board and Directors described Tecra as brilliant adding that her passion and energy were the source of crucial innovations in enriching the company’s products.
“While we mourn the loss of a remarkable young lady, we also celebrate her life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true and be willing to explore and push their limits,” their statement added.
Tecra was a private person and this was revealed by her elder sister, Anerlisa Mungai who said that the deceased would at times introduce her as a friend because she did not like being in the limelight.
In an Instagram post about two months ago, Anerlisa posted a photo of her and Tecra saying that she doesn’t post her as often because she was a private person.
“My sister is so cold towards me. When we walk together then she sees a lot of people, she always leaves me like somebody she doesn’t know. She also introduces me as her friend lol, the worst is when she denies me. She just hates the spotlight and that is why I don’t post her on my page even if it’s a family photo,” said Anerlisa.
Rapper Chinko Ekun shared a video of a loaded trailer that had no brake yet the driver chose to drive it with the help of a conductor who intermittently “shocks” the tyre with a stone.
The truck, though not road worthy, plied the same route as other cars, thereby posing a risk to other road users coming behind.
Chinko captioned the video:
I am on my way out and I saw something really risky . Just take a look at the trailer in this video . It doesn’t have a brake and the other guy has to always shock the tyre with stones at intervals . God please protect those at the back of this trailer .. Naija na wa o !!!!!
Two person sustained injuries when a container body fell on them along Owerri road, by Obodo Ukwu junction, Onitsha, Anambra State on Monday October 21.
Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police command, Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident said no fatality was recorded.
“However a woman who was passing by sustained injury and was taken to the hospital but now responding to treatment. Scene was cordoned off by Police patrol teams and effort is ongoing to clear obstruction to enable free flow of traffic in the area.” said Mohammed
An accident involving multiple vehicles around the Bypass area of Gombe state has left six people dead.
According to eye witnesses, an open truck said to belong to Dangote experienced brake failure, the truck was said to be conveying ceiling sheets. The truck was said to have rammed into other vehicles and in the process knocked them into a nearby canal.
An eyewitness, Julaibib Musa, who narrated how the incident played out said “the accident happened a few minutes ago. It was the Dangote truck that started brushing an 18-seater bus, with LAG Agege 814 plate number, with three passengers and tricycles into the canal.”
A survivor, who identified himself as Mubarak, a tricycle operator said, ‘after dropping passengers, I tried to take a U-turn when I saw the truck approaching. Before I could do anything the truck was about to hit me, it was then I tried to divert my tricycle to avoid been crushed”.
The deputy commissioner of police DCP Nasiru Mohammed, who confirmed the accident said it is a terrible occurrence. “Well my men said about (6) six people were confirmed dead, while over ten (10) others are receiving treatment, so far”.
It will be recalled that this accident is the third within six months around the same spot. The first incident involved a truck conveying petroleum product to Biu, in Borno State, it claimed over ten lives and dozens were burnt beyond recognition, the second which claimed three lives was also conveying diesel to Biu. Rescue efforts were ongoing as of the time of filing this report by the joint effort of Police, FRSC, and Red cross.
Two BRT buses were involved in a head-on collision early this morning at Asolo, Ikorodu road in Lagos.
Although the casualty figures are yet to be confirmed, eyewitnesses said many who were injured have been taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The accident occurred on the BRT corridor and resulted in traffic gridlock as onlookers flooded the scene of the crash.
This accident comes barely one week after several persons were injured after a trailer collided with a BRT vehicle in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Nigerian dance queen, Kaffy is full of thanks to God for sparing the life of her husband who was involved in a terrible car crash along the Lekki-Epe expressway early this morning.
In an exclusive chat with LIB, Kaffy narratated the incident saying, ‘my husband was involved in a car accident, a very ghastly one. His car somersaulted many times. If you see the pictures, they are very very terrible, you will not believe anyone can survive it’.
She further explained that, ‘he was asleep when it happened because his driver was the one driving. When the car tumbled and stopped, it landed upside down so he had to remove his seat belt and push out a door to get out, he helped the driver out and before he knew it, area boys gather at the scene, stole his phones and other things. He eventually got help and I’m just glad he’s ok’.
